MODAK : THE SWEET MOMOS ๐
My 3rd Blog,
It was month of March, the Corona pandemic has been started in India. I thought corona will finish up until July and I will be enjoying other days of 2020, but it did not happen as all of you expected.
And then August days started, that means Lord Ganesha's Month. Bappa arrives and most of people give warm welcome. They make lots of tasty food, follow Rituals, Poojas etc.
Due to Corona, Government has enforced lots of restriction to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, but there is one thing common in each Ganesh Chaturthi, Modak.
Modak is one of
the most popular dessert in Maharashtra. It is delicious and mouthwatering. It
made up of rice flour/refined flour and consist of jaggery and
coconut mixture, it could be steam/fried. Another name of Modak is sweet
stuffed dumpling (MOMOS)
Recipe of Modak and Momos are different, but the shape of both food items are quite smiler that reason Modak another name is Momos.
Whenever there is Sankashti Chaturthi
or Ganpati Bappa festival every Hindu people prepare holy offerings (Prasad) Modak to the Lord.
I made Modaks in the month of May on occasion of Sankashti Chaturthi. It was too yummy, soft, and mouthwatering.
The recipe of Modak is simple. Moreover it has an art, which makes it so Yummm!!!
INGREDIENTS :
PROCEDURE :
Step 1: Making filling
1. Heat a ghee in pan, add Cardamom powder and Nutmeg powder, keep slow flame.
2. Further
add grated coconut and grated Jaggery stir on slow flame.
3. Continues
stair in slow flame till jaggery is not completely melt then add some more cardamom powder and mix well and cook on slow flame for 5 to 6 minutes.
4. When all moisture evaporates, and the mixture thickens keep aside to cool.
Step 2: Preparation
1. Place
the rice flour in a deep bowl and add boiled water slowly, mix well using
spoon.
2. Then
knead a dough to make soft and smooth cover the dough and keep aside
3. Knead
a dough again by using 1/2 tsp of ghee and divide a dough into 21 parts.
4. Take
one part of dough roll it in small size then by using palm take 1 tbsp of
filling and keep in the middle of that roti.
5. With
the help of another hand thumb and forefinger gently pinch of little dough to
make pleat on outer side. With half to 3/4 inch apart you can make as many pleats
as possible.
6. Bring
that pleat all together gently and seal giving a good shape.
Step 3: Cooking of Modak
1. In a
steamer put 2 glasses of water and keep rolling bowl above the water.
2. On
that rolling bowl keep banana leaf to protect the base of the Modak, then keep
that Modak on the leaf and stem around 20 minutes.
( This
recipe is for Steamed Modak, if
you want to make Fried Modak then you have to use refined flour, follow the same procedure and at the last
instead of steam you can use ghee/oil for frying the Modak )
