PuranPoli : Maharashtrian Sweet Flatbread

My 4th Blog,

Tomorrow is my favorite day, Ganesh Chaturthi. Every Maharashtrian is eagerly waiting for this festival. In Maharashtrian culture, people prefer to make Modak, Puranpoli, Patoli or Laddu to Bappa for Holy offering (Prasad).

On 12th August, I made PuranPoli according to my Mother's recipe. Coincidentally it was a holy day of Janmashtami (Janmashtami is the annual Hindu festival to celebrate Birth of Lord Krishna). I along with my mother, prepared sweet, delicious, and mouth-watering PuranPoli.

What is PuranPoli?

Puranpoli is the popular Maharashtrian recipe made during on holy days such as Holi, Ganesh Chaturthi, or Diwali. PuranPoli is a sweet flatbread stuffed with a lentils filling made from skinned split Bengal gram (Chana dal) and jaggery.

PuranPoli, also known as Holige in some areas. A recipe for PuranPoli is mentioned in Manasollasa, the 12th-century Sanskrit encyclopedia complied by Someshvara III, who ruled the state of Karnataka.

Types of Puran Poli made in across India.

·  Gujrati Puran Poli – Thick flatbread usually made with Toor daal and jaggery.

·  Andhra Pradesh Bobbattu – Thin flatbread usually made with Chana daal and jaggery, the filling can also have nuts.
